Widespread and moderately common in rainforest, gullies, and eucalypt forest with a thick understorey. Absent from degraded forests, and probably declining from habitat loss.

Rainforest, wet sclerophyll forest, riparian forest, eucalypt forest with a thick understorey.
Specific ecology
Thick understorey with plenty of low stems, eg. wattle saplings.
Habitat comment
Removal of understorey from eucalypt forest by clearing for stock, removes habitat for this bird.
Management
Generally an indicator of habitat quality.
